Social Media Pushing Mobile Web
One major catalyst in the mobile web revolution is social media. The problem is the web isn't necessarily mobile-friendly. People are tolerant right now because they haven't seen great mobile-friendly websites. We see opportunity to increase revenues, expand marketing opportunities, and build customer loyalty for those who embrace the mobile web and put themselves ahead of the game.
Facebook, Twitter, Google Buzz, and several other "social media" related sites are being used more and more on mobile phones. Techcrunch reported that Facebook is seeing mobile growth faster than the desktop. This is a result of Facebook making their platform more easily accessible through mobile devices: SMS subscriptions on Fan pages, mobile Facebooks apps on the iPhone, Android, and Blackberry devices, mobile-friendly web versions of Facebook, etc.
The problem? There are many links shared on Twitter and Facebook and people are accessing these links on-the-go on their iPhones, Androids, and Blackberries. These links take the mobile user to websites that aren't built for mobile devices. Sure, you can pinch, zoom, try to figure out the navigation, hope the site doesn't have flash (which doesn't work on mobile devices), and what not... but I'd venture off to say that people are tolerant right now. When you navigate a website that is mobile-friendly you realize how much better the experience is with properly formatted mobile websites.
